Same Job, New Season: Showing Up With Integrity

August has a funny way of reminding you that time is moving whether you’re ready or not. The kids are heading back to school. Vacations are winding down. Summer Fridays are disappearing, and suddenly, everyone is talking about getting “back into a routine.”

And then there's you.

Still at the same job.

Maybe you love it. Maybe you tolerate it. Maybe you absolutely cannot stand it—but you need the paycheck.

And that's real talk.

But needing a job doesn't mean you have to abandon your integrity while you're there.

Sometimes we talk about leaving a bad workplace as if everyone has the same freedom to walk away — but everyone doesn’t.

People have bills. Families. Student loans. Healthcare and adult responsibilities.

Sometimes you need the job and hate the job.

Two things can be true at the same time.

For BIPOC professionals, there can be another layer to this. We may already feel pressure to prove ourselves, work harder, stay professional, and carefully manage how we're perceived. So leaving isn't always an immediate option. Sometimes you have to stay while you figure out what's next.

But needing a job doesn't mean you have to abandon your integrity while you're there.

Showing up doesn't mean pretending.

❌ You don't have to fake enthusiasm.

❌ You don't have to become the office martyr.

❌ You don't have to take on everyone's work.

❌ You don't have to sacrifice your peace to prove you're committed.

And you can decide that while you're there, you're going to do your work well. Treat people with respect.

✅ Protect your reputation.

✅ Keep learning.

✅ Document your contributions.

✅ Build relationships.

✅ Take your lunch.

✅ Go home.

And quietly figure out what comes next.

Your current job can be a chapter without becoming your identity.

Maybe that's the reminder we need as summer winds down: You don't have to love where you are to be intentional about how you show up.

Because sometimes integrity isn't about staying. It's about deciding who you'll be while you're there.
